Lara Croft Reborn by Seraphartman Lara Croft Reborn by Seraphartman
This is my entry for the contest. I was influenced by some of the Mondo posters out there and create a more illustrative style. I also wanted to show Roth, one of the wolves and part of one of the statues in the background to help show what influences and transforms her into her survivor self. Created in Photoshop CS4. Thanks.

Edit: Special thanks to Square Enix and Deviantart for holding this contest and to all of the great submissions and a special thanks to blackoutt for posing.

I really appreciate your comment. There has been both a lot of love and not so much love for it but comments like yours and the support I have received and feedback makes it worth it. Trust me no one was more surprised that it was one of the ones selected than me. I am truly grateful to the judges for selecting mine but when I look at the other pieces that were selected and others that were not I often wonder why this one was even considered.

I agree I would have liked to have done something different with the bow. It seems a little to small for one thing and I mainly added it because it seemed to be such an important part of the game. The gun was added more as a reference to her traditional two pistols she has in other games. The background was a little lost when I uploaded the image. The whole thing lightened up so it is suppose to be a bit darker so that the background and features of Lara would stand out a bit more but I am glad people do notice the images in the back. In a way I like that the background takes a few glances to notice or see but I would have liked to have more contrast because on certain views especially thumbnails it just looks like a blood patch.

Unfortunately, the face came out looking more like the models rather than Lara's I think it needs to be more full if that makes sense. I would make her pants more brown rather than green to but this is why I enjoy feedback so that I can improve on the next one and so on. Again, thank you for your comment and support it helps to keep improving and pushing myself and others to continue to get better.

Thanks for the long and detailed reply, it's very much appreciated.
I think my prejudice toward the picture came from the thumbnail (and maybe the bow, I do archery... sorry. But that's just me and a detail I always criticize). The thumbnail really looks crappy since all the detail and careful coloring is lost.

Regarding Lara's face... this -could- be Lara, unless other pictures where the 'off' face simply fails. You kind of managed to distill the essence of 'Laraness' and drape it over your model's features. That's to a large degree what makes this drawing special: Your Lara looks entirely human.
A human that has seen to many horrors and lost too many friends in too short a time and is beginning to turn into an almost savage survivor. No gloss, no heroes. If you could keep that unique quality while tweaking the face to be more like in the game it would be quite stunning, but it doesn't need this to work. Hard to say what would work best, really.

Am I making sense? Probably not.

Anyway, all the best and best of luck!

You make perfect sense and thank you for the feedback it will definitely help with future work and is a good way for me to get a gauge of what people think and where i can improve. I look forward to hopefully many more discussions.

Composition, mood, stance, attention to detail and realistic look of clothing and gun, all perfect. Would improve the picture if the not-so-perfect bow was absent as the diagonal line and piece of wood above her shoulder somehow go against the background and her stance... maybe its just generally distracting. Anyway, the real killer that makes this picture a top contender is the background.
Tells a whole story but needs a second glance to even notice it, an effect that adds incredible depth. Would make a great poster or cover art or framed picture for the office.

To be honest, when I first saw this picture I thought 'why is this crap in the top 25'. Well. So much for first impressions - live and learn.
The longer i look at it the less it bothers me that she doesn't look -exactly- like Lara. Lara's characterization is overwhelmingly present, which is what counts.

So, to sum up my ramblings: Please win.
This is one of the absolutely best in the whole contest and better than the other 24 semifinalists by a mile :)

This is awesome to the max, but I wish it had two things to make it the best. I would have liked her to have Laura's face (Croft doesn't have blue eyes) and I would have liked to see all of the gear that (besides the weapons) she wears, utility belt of some sort? After all, if she hadn't found the walkie-talkie, maybe the wolves would've been the only thing to influence her. Roth gave her hope to keep going so yeah. But this is still pretty awesome.

Thank you for your feedback. I agree her face ended up favoring the model I think more than than Lara's and needs to be more round and softer in areas. I painted her eyes green, close to the same shade as the grass however, when I uploaded the png a lot of the contrast was lost and lightened everything up to where her eye's now do look blue unfortunately. I would have liked to added a belt it would have helped give her a little bit more of her character but I started it late sad to say. Thanks again for your feedback it really helps for my future projects.

don't have to say it but I will. This is original and compelling in looks and design compared to the rest. I hope you win the big one!
